The city of Chesapeake is facing allegations of discrimination from an African-American detective employed with the police department there. The detective has filed a lawsuit against the city of Chesapeake, the chief of police and three other officers.

The allegations stem from a 2015 incident, when the detective learned an internal investigation had been launched on his behalf. His undercover detective tactics were under scrutiny after police learned he had been sending angry text messages to an underage suspect.

The detective was reprimanded for his actions and was accused of failing to properly collect evidence. He also allegedly failed to document his hours properly and changed his schedule without authorization. The detective was transferred to a different department.

He argues he was treated unfairly, especially when compared to other white detectives who acted in a similar fashion. The captain, sergeant and lieutenant being sued are all white.

The detective says he has faced losses and emotional distress and is suing for compensatory and punitive damages. He has requested a trial by jury.

The city of Chesapeake insists no discrimination has occurred and argues that comparing his own actions to those of other white police officers is like comparing apples and oranges.

While it’s not clear whether this discrimination suit will be an open and shut case, we applaud the detective for standing up for himself legally. He remains employed by the city of Chesapeake. Many wait until after they’ve left a position to file a lawsuit.

Source One Staffing, Inc., a Chicago based staffing agency, will pay $800,000 to settle multiple U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) discrimination claims.

The EEOC filed two lawsuits against the company, citing violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Some of the more specific charges are as follows:

The EEOC first attempted to reach a pre-litigation settlement through its conciliation process, but was unsuccessful in doing so. This led to two lawsuits in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, Eastern Division.

Of the $800,000 set to be paid, $700,000 will go directly to victims of retaliation and harassment.

 

Local 28 of the Sheet Metal Workers’ International Association, located in New York City, has agreed to create a back fund pay for workers to settle a race discrimination lawsuit.

The union will pay roughly $12.7 million over five years, while also providing remedial relief, to resolve the claims brought by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), as well as others.

The settlement came about after negotiations between the union and the EEOC, the City of New York, the New York State Division of Human Rights, the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, and several Hispanic and black union members.

The case is on hold until July 14th, at which time the court will consider approving the settlement.

The EEOC added the following, which shows just how serious this case truly is:

“Over the 44-year history of this case, the federal district court issued a number of rulings that Local 28 discriminated against non-white journeypersons on the basis of race, in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.”

A race discrimination lawsuit against Newport News Industrial Corp. continues to get worse for the company, with 26 more former and current workers adding their name to the original lawsuit.

The original lawsuit, which was filed by eight workers last year, alleges that workers were denied pay increases and promotions because they were African American. Furthermore, they contend they were subjected to a hostile work environment.

The lawsuit examines many of the alleged acts, such as this one outlined by an article in the Daily Press:

“In one case, the suit alleges, a white supervisor holding the noose showed it to a black worker while a white co-worker laughed. Another time, the suit contends, black workers discovered a noose hanging from an air filter.”

Currently, there are 34 plaintiffs in the lawsuit, with 21 of the people still working for Newport News Industrial Corp. The lawsuit also includes retaliation and wrongful termination claims among many of the workers who are longer part of the company.

While the company has yet to file a response, it is safe to assume this is coming in the near future. From there, the 34 plaintiffs will continue to fight for their rights.

As far as the food industry is concerned, there are not many brands more well known than McDonald’s. Unfortunately for the fast food giant, a group of former workers from Virginia are suing the company for racial discrimination.

Nine of the 10 plaintiffs are African-American and the other is Hispanic. All of them believe they were wrongfully terminated and replaced with primarily white workers.

In addition to discrimination, the plaintiffs also claim that women who worked at the restaurant were sexually harassed, which included being groped.

In most cases similar to this one, it is the franchisee that is sued when a question of discrimination comes to the forefront. With this one, however, the plaintiffs feel that McDonald’s should be held responsible. The lawsuit adds:

“In order to maximize its profit, McDonald’s Corporate has control over nearly every aspect of its restaurants’ operations. Though nominally independent, franchised McDonald’s restaurants are predominantly controlled by McDonald’s.”

Three federal lawsuits have been filed against the Connecticut state Department of Correction alleging that the agency discriminated against them because of their race.

The African American workers filed the lawsuits between the months of September and November of 2013. One of the lawsuit involves 12 employees who worked in different capacities at multiple prisons.

According to the lawsuit filed by the 12 workers, the Department of Corrections subjected African American employees to harsher discipline than white employees while also retaliating against them when they filed complaints of harassment or discrimination.

The lawsuit also notes that the Department of Corrections failed to provide the same training to African American employees.
